Post match review: Viktoria Plzeň 1 - 2 United

Back to winning ways!

Rasmus Højlund came off the bench to score twice as we overturned a deficit to secure a crucial Europa League victory against Viktoria Plzeň.

Højlund, now with five goals in this season’s Europa League, sparked United’s second-half comeback with an impressive display after being introduced from the bench.

The 21-year-old forward equalised following some clever link-up play between Antony and Amad Diallo. He reacted quickest to poke the ball home from close range after Diallo’s initial shot was blocked.

Moments later, the Danish international struck again, latching onto Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly weighted pass before drilling a low shot into the bottom-right corner.

Højlund’s heroics spared further embarrassment for goalkeeper André Onana, who was at fault for the opening goal. For the second game running, the Cameroon international made a costly error, this time gifting Viktoria Plzeň the lead.

Onana’s attempt to pass out from the back was intercepted by Pavel Šulc, who unselfishly squared the ball to Matej Vydra. The former Derby and Burnley striker made no mistake, slotting into an empty net from six yards.

"Follow, follow, follow, United are going Bilbao..." Ok, maybe too early to get carried away but that was a much needed win at Old Trafford. Author - Liam C Amad Diallo’s second-half double gave Ruud's reds the win they needed over Greek champions PAOK to kick-start our Europa League campaign and give incoming boss Ruben Amorim a shot at sealing a coveted top-eight finish.  Amad was by far our biggest goal threat. He broke the deadlock when he sent a looping header into the far corner five minutes after the interval. The Ivorian sealed the win when he curled home from the edge of the area 13 minutes from time. Tarik Tissoudall wasted PAOK’s best opportunity when he failed to convert from eight yards with only Andre Onana to beat. Porto 3 - 3 MUFC Harry Maguire salvaged a dramatic draw for a 10-man Manchester United side, who had thrown away a two-goal lead and seen Bruno Fernandes sent off in their Europa League clash against Porto. Author - Liam C Maguire's injury-time header could be a lifeline for under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag, with the team just seconds from suffering their fourth defeat in ten games at the start of the season. In the first of five added minutes, Maguire leapt to meet Christian Eriksen's corner and expertly nodded the ball into the bottom corner, securing a crucial point. Post match review: United 0 - 2 Newcastle

Things can only get better Author - Liam C Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the final match of the calendar year. The visitors took an early lead just four minutes in, with Alexander Isak heading home, and they maintained their momentum, doubling the advantage through Joelinton after 20 minutes. Chances for United were hard to come by in a challenging first half. A disallowed second goal for Isak due to offside and Sandro Tonali striking the post from close range hinted that the damage could have been worse on another evening. Ruben Amorim's side showed more spark in the second half, with Harry Maguire hitting the woodwork on the hour mark, but United couldn’t find a way past Newcastle’s solid defence.
