Post match review: United 5 - 2 Leicester

Image
Ruud Van Nistelrooy tra la la la... Ruud began his tenure as Manchester United’s interim manager on a high, with his team cruising past Leicester to secure a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Author - Olivia T The view from the terraces We caught up with Liam after the match who gave us a good insight into the mood from the iconic Old Trafford terraces. Ultimately, this was a very successful night for us. The types of chances that we were missing against West Ham and Fenerbache were being put away against Leicester. You'd say that this wasn't the players upping the game for the manager but perhaps playing with more freedom after a difficult few weeks. Once again, the EFL Cup looks to have opened up slightly for us. Whilst Spurs and Liverpool remain, it definitely appears to be a winnable competition that would start the new era on a high. In the wider context of things, who knows what will happen next? It was just nice to live the ground with a smile on my face. R

Ten Hag sacked

Image
There has been an expected managerial change Author - Olivia T Ten Hag's last match ended in a 2-1 defeat against West Ham , leaving the club in 14th place in the Premier League with only three wins from their first nine matches. The club exercised a one-year extension in Ten Hag's contract after their FA Cup final win against Manchester City in May . However, just over three months later, he has been dismissed. We currently sit on 11 points after nine games, marking their second-lowest tally in the Premier League at this stage (only slightly better than the 10 points Ole's side had in the 2019-20 season). Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag's Assistant Manager, has been named as interim manager whilst we search for the club's 6th manager.  What I think If we're being honest, this decision was probably made after United's 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the end of last season . Following that game, it almost became a foregone conclusion that Erik ten Hag's

Is it time for the manager to go now? That was another poor result. Author - Olivia T That late penalty from Jarrod Bowen handed Ten Hag's side a 2-1 defeat. Casemiro had briefly revived our hopes of taking a point, heading in with less than ten minutes to go to cancel out Summerville’s 74th-minute goal.  Controversy struck with just three minutes remaining when referee David Coote was called to the pitchside monitor by the Video Assistant Referee to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box. Despite protests from United’s players, who claimed a handball by Ings, Coote awarded the penalty, and Bowen kept his cool to slot the ball past AndrĂ© Onana. Post match review: Fenerbache 1 - 1 United

Image
A point gained or two points dropped? Author - Liam C United had gone into the break with a lead, thanks to Christian Eriksen’s fourth goal of the season. However, four minutes into the second half, the hosts drew level when Youssef En-Nesyri slipped between United's defenders to nod in Allan Saint-Maximin’s close-range cross. As the atmosphere intensified and the noise levels soared, Mourinho was sent off by French referee ClĂ©ment Turpin just before the hour mark. The dismissal came after Mourinho led fervent appeals for a penalty when Bright Osayi-Samuel went down following a challenge from United midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Despite heated protests from the Fenerbahçe bench,  VAR supported Turpin’s decision that there was no foul play. Turpin approached the technical area and instructed Mourinho to leave, and though the Portuguese manager took his time, he eventually settled on the steps at the front of the stand, close enough to continue passing on instructions to his coaching st

UEL Preview: Fenerbahce vs United

Fenerbahce vs Manchester United The home side are of course led by our old friend Jose Mourinho Author - Liam C Erik ten Hag faces up against the "special one" for the very first time, aiming to build on the promise shown during the second half against Brentford on Saturday. United's form has been steady since getting thumped 3-0 at home to Tottenham, with the Dutchman requiring a considerable uptick in form to ease the pressure on his shoulders. In the Europa League, United are 21st in the league phase table, while the hosts are 13th with four points having beat Union Saint-Gilloise on Matchday 1.  More United news from the European Super Football blog can be found by clicking here Who's in and who isn't? Post match review: United 2 - 1 Brentford

Image
That was a much better performance United staged a comeback at Old Trafford, securing a 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. Author - Liam C Brentford took the lead through Ethan Pinnock in first-half stoppage time, in a controversial moment that came after the allocated additional time had expired. United were temporarily down to 10 men, with Matthijs de Ligt receiving treatment for a head injury. Alejandro Garnacho produced a stunning volleyed equaliser shortly after half-time, setting the stage for United's resurgence. Rasmus Højlund then netted his second goal of the season, capping off a brilliant performance and putting United ahead—a lead they held onto for the rest of the match. Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken made several impressive saves to prevent United from extending their lead, but it was a solid all-around team performance from Erik ten Hag’s side after a challenging start to the season, with many players standing out across t

Women's Team: United eventually ease to win over Spurs

Image
Manchester United 3 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Elisabeth Terland netted her first two goals for Manchester United, guiding us to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Tottenham in the Women's Super League. Author - Liam C A closer look at what happened Elisabeth Terland's first two goals for United, scored just before half-time, proved to be the game-changer, with the Norwegian striker demonstrating sharp instincts in the box to give us a lead that Spurs couldn't recover from. Maya Le Tissier sealed the victory with a well-taken penalty just before the hour mark. Meanwhile, the Reds continue their impressive defensive record, having now gone four consecutive matches without conceding across all competitions. Let's explore some of the best reaction Olivia T, in her article for European Super Football, said: "It was an unusual match, to be honest, and the stats we have all seen don’t quite tell the full story of the scoreline. However, that result ultimately highlights just

Rumours: What's happening with Harry Maguire?

Image
Is it time for Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United? The former Leicester City defender has dropped down the United pecking order over the last few seasons under current manager Erik ten Hag.  Maguire was stripped of the captaincy before the 2023/2024 season with Bruno Fernandes handed the armband in his place. The English defender was linked with a move to West Ham during the summer of 2023, but a transfer did not materialise. Author - Olivia T A closer look at Maguire's United career The experienced defender fell down the pecking order under Ten Hag as the Dutch head coach favored Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane during the 2022/23 season.  Under Ten Hag, Maguire has struggled to secure a consistent starting position, often finding himself in and out of the team as Ten Hag preferred other center-backs. Our summer transfer business could have seen Maguire drop in the pecking order as we signed Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt. Latest Premier League news and stories from

Discussion: Where will United finish in this season's Premier League?

Image
Where will this United side finish in this season's Premier League  It has certainly been a difficult start. We've lost to Brighton, Liverpool, and Spurs by an aggregate score of 8-1. This shows us that our players will probably struggle in league matches against decent opponents. Let's explore where we could finish the season in more detail. Author - Olivia T Naturally, you'd expect us to drop more points against the likes of city, Arsenal, and maybe even Chelsea who are in great form, as well as Newcastle. Last season, we finished 8th with a negative goal difference, and despite having improved on the squad with new signings in the summer, ten Hag looks like he could be on his way to achieving an even worse finish on the table.  Could a new manager change anything? This is the big question that the hierarchy at Old Trafford will be trying to answer. When Solskjaer took over after Mourinho was sacked in 2018, there was an immediate upturn in form. That culminated

Analysis: Poor run of results continues

More post match analysis from the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. Our worst start to a league season in recent memory continued with a goalless draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, a match that fell far short of expectations and registered the lowest combined expected goals (xG) of any Premier League game in the last two years. Author - Liam C In hindsight, perhaps history could have been a better guide. Villa had only beaten us once at home in their previous 25 meetings, yet the dominant narrative in the lead-up centred around Erik ten Hag’s struggles, with the anticipation of yet another slip-up looming large. Under pressure, the Dutch manager replaced his centre-backs with Harry Maguire and Lisandro MartĂnez after conceding six goals in the last two matches. Christian Eriksen again lined up in midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo, but the changes did little to spark United’s attack. Instead, the match turned into a scrappy affair, where a more defensive approach might have served better.

Post match review: Villa 0 - 0 United

Jonny Evans superb as United battle for a draw at Villa Villa 0 - 0 MUFC Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the hard-fought draw at Aston Villa eases some of the intense pressure surrounding his role. Author - Olivia T gave her thoughts In contrast to recent performances, we showed signs of the resilience that had been sorely lacking during the home defeat to Tottenham and the defensive frailty witnessed against Porto in the Europa League. Ten Hag called upon experienced defenders Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans to bring stability to the backline, though Maguire was forced off with an injury just before half-time. Marcus Rashford twice tested Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, while United captain Bruno Fernandes came closest to scoring with a second-half free-kick that rattled the crossbar in front of the Holte End. Substitute Antony also drew an impressive acrobatic save from Martinez with a long-range effort. Meanwhile, United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, had a relatively quiet evenin

Post match review: Porto 3 - 3 United

Harry Maguire to the rescue! Porto 3 - 3 MUFC Harry Maguire salvaged a dramatic draw for a 10-man Manchester United side, who had thrown away a two-goal lead and seen Bruno Fernandes sent off in their Europa League clash against Porto. Author - Liam C Maguire's injury-time header could be a lifeline for under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag, with the team just seconds from suffering their fourth defeat in ten games at the start of the season. In the first of five added minutes, Maguire leapt to meet Christian Eriksen's corner and expertly nodded the ball into the bottom corner, securing a crucial point. UEL preview: Porto v United

Image
Porto v Manchester United Fresh from that awful performance against Spurs at the weekend, Erik ten Hag received a renewed kiss of death from the club. Manchester United must get a result in Portugal to break a three-match winless run and give their manager some hope.  This United fan provides us with some pre match opinion and analysis. Author - Liam C I’m rarely bullish against Manchester United due to their streaky nature and ability to randomly turn their legs on – especially when losing or in some high-pressure moments as seen by the FA Cup Final. However, what we’ve seen lately is United simply dead on arrival. Not for one moment against Spurs, even before Bruno’s red card, did you think a home win was remotely possible. I believed in the club's decision to keep Erik after his cup win over Manchester rivals. However, it seems like only a matter of time before he leaves Old Trafford and joins the list of managers who can't get the best performance out of the existing pl

Iconic Moments: Late in May in 1999...

Image
United v Bayern Munich 1999 The first in a series of articles where we talk about some classic Manchester United matches Background Manchester United went into the game having won the league and cup double and we were now chasing a historic treble. The quest for glory in Europe's premier competition had been the focus point of United's development since they qualified in 1993. There were some memorable encounters along the route to the final. That included an incredible comeback against Juventus. The match itself  United were without Paul Scholes and captain Roy Keane who were both suspended. Mario Basler gave Bayern the lead after 5 minutes, and as the game developed, it started to look like they would win and that Fergie's side would fall short. There was to be a dramatic end to the game though. Goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Solskjaer in stoppage gave United a win that we will talk about forever.  United fans remember that night in Barcelona Stuart, a Manches

Super Reds Legends: Roy Keane

Roy Keane is another football icon. He is someone that won a number of team and individual honours during a hugely successful playing career. A brief overview He is the joint most successful Irish footballer of all time, having won 19 major trophies in his club career, 17 of which came during his time at Manchester United. Many regard him as one of the best midfielders of his generation. In 2004. he was named by PelĂ© in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.  In his 18-year playing career, Keane played for Cobh Ramblers, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United before ending his career at Celtic. He was a dominating box-to-box midfielder noted for his aggressive and highly competitive style of play.  This was an attitude that helped him excel as captain of Manchester United from 1997 until his departure in 2005.
